Operable Walls for Sustainable Design

Course Description: Operable wall systems integrate the indoors and outdoors and define interior spaces, providing flexibility and additional usable area without increasing a building's footprint. Occupants benefit from expansive daylighting and views as well as quick access to fresh air. This course describes the types of operable wall systems, how they contribute to sustainable design, and the various options and considerations for selecting the correct system.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:

  • Define operable wall systems and their different types and characteristics.
  • Discuss the general sustainability benefits of operable glass walls and their potential LEED credit contributions.
  • List the customization options to enable a wall system to meet specific project needs including configuration, thermal performance, solar control, sound mitigation, and ADA compliance.
  • Describe the design, performance, and sustainability benefits or operable glass walls in terms of a variety of specific project types and case studies.
