Intelligent Daylight Design for Glazing Systems

Course Description: People spend more than 90% of their time indoors; incorporating sunrooms, conservatories, greenhouses and/or other glass structures into homes or workplaces can be an affective way to reap the benefits of daylight. The positive impacts of incorporating more natural light into your lifestyle can be seen through energy savings, increase of productivity, and improvement of overall well-being. This presentation reviews strategies and design options to create unique overhead structures , standing structures, and vertical glazing systems that are energy efficient, comfortable, and functional.

Upon completion of this course, the Learner should be able to:


  • Discuss the beneficial impacts of daylight on energy savings; occupant health, well-being, and productivity; and return on investment.
  • Describe design options in overhead structures, standing structures, and vertical glazing in both residential and commercial applications that are incorporated to protect people from the elements.
  • Explain the design considerations to maximize benefits in terms of energy efficiency, solar control and shading, ventilation, safety, and functionality.
  • List an array of installation types and uses.
